As you can imagine, similar to a lot of my peers, I spend an enormous amount of time talking to and helping prospective through their business school application process. But, unlike many of my peers, I have been helping students, especially black women applying to dental school, for many years as my way of giving back. Overtime, I have developed a deft skillset in personal storytelling – helping people develop, refine and package their own stories for personal statements and interviews.
For many people that look like me, we are what are defined as splitters – where one part of our application may be stronger than the other. For me, I knew that my test scores were decent, but that it was my personal statement that would ultimately crack the door open for me to interview at a top program. But, even for myself, it was incredibly difficult to tell my story myself. It took my closest mentor Mallom Liggon to sit me down and say, “Hey Mo, this is good, but this isn’t really you – you have to go deeper.” I was shocked, because I thought I had done a pretty dam good job. If it wasn’t for him, I may not be in the position that I’m in today. Through completing my own business school application process and helping countless students along the way, I have developed frameworks that allow me to swiftly help others make their personal statements true stories and something that they are immensely proud to submit. (With a pretty stellar track record!)
In order to put some structure around the work that I already do, I have chosen to join a small consulting firm called Ivy Grad Services LLC, which was founded by Ashley C. Lhérisson, Esq., a Black female Columbia law grad. She saw the need in our communities to have representation and guidance through this process, so we can see diversity numbers in acceptance ranks continue to rise. It is imperative that we continue to do this work, so we are.
