okay…now for the good stuff:

Prior To Booth

Traveling the world as I ran Kensho was amazing experience that I’m extremely grateful for. Growing up in a very working-class neighborhood of Miami, I couldn’t have imagined some of the experiences I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy these past few years. I’m very fortunate that at a young age my dad always encouraged me to be an entrepreneur, so I’ve always had this vague notion of wanting to be a “businessman” for a living. After I graduated from Penn I followed a traditional path to a big Wall Street bank and began my career at JPMorgan where I worked in asset management in the Latin American group. While I was there I felt really out of place, everything about working there felt antithetical to who I was as a person— I knew a traditional finance career was not for me.

Per Mike’s Request Hit UpL Tokyo, Hong Kong & Tulum

Luckily, early on I met a young ex-McKinsey private equity consultant in Miami that was transitioning his advisory business into a principal investments business and he hired me to help him bring that vision to life. As his associate, I learned the basics of building a private equity business from scratch and got see what it takes to bring that sort of idea from concept to reality. Three years later, after successfully building the business and co-leading the firm’s first major acquisition, I felt I needed to do something different. I felt unfulfilled. So, I took a month-long sabbatical to India. While I was there I got to participate in a Dalai Lama-led Buddhist ceremony called the Kalachakra and I spent some time meditating in Hindu ashrams (got to stay next to the now closed “Beatles ashram” in Rishikesh!). The clarity I received through those experiences made it clear it was time for a change. Thus, Kensho Ventures was born.

He’s as dope as he seems – and if you don’t believe me you should check out his instagram.

People are going to be less limited by geography. We’re going to see people embrace dispersed and global teams and people will benefit from intellectual capital that is more spread out. We’ve proved that that model can work. A lot of industries that tend to be centered around certain locations (e.g. Finance in NY, Tech in San Fran) they will be able to tap into broader talent pools.

What’s The Hardest Lesson You’ve Learned Thus Far?

That life and the system doesn’t reward hard work, it rewards the right work. Also, that you have to ask for what you want and go out and get it, don’t expect people to just give it to you.
